United Kingdom backs nomination of Cuban Medical Brigade for Nobel Peace Prize

By BBN Staff: The United Kingdom has rallied its support behind a nomination for the Cuban doctors of the Henry Reeve Brigade to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

The media outlet Loop reports that four UK legislators have made formal submissions of support for the nominations along with 12 other parliamentarians who submitted requests for nomination. Eight members of the UK’s academic community have also given their support of the nomination for the Cuban doctors.

American actor and activist, Danny Glover, started a petition in the United States to nominate Cuban doctors of the Henry Reeve Brigade for a Nobel Peace Prize back in June 2020, in honor of their humanitarian work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several other petitions had been launched, garnering thousands of signatures; however, official nominations can only be made by parliamentarians, academics, awardees, judges of international courts, and active or retired members of the Committee. Former Belizean Prime Minister Said Musa was among those who publicly expressed his support for the nomination back in 2020. The deadline for Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize is January 31.

As the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in countries all over the world, the Henry Reeve Brigade deployed its doctors to help overburdened medical systems cope with the rapidly increasing number of patients. Countries such as Kuwait, Italy, Mexico, and Belize were just a few of the recipients of this critical aid at a time where millions were being infected and many were dying.
