BREAKING: Sugar cane season facing halt due to weather, production issues

Posted: Tuesday, January 5, 2021. 1:40 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Facing a reduced level of delivery of sugar cane without which the mill at Tower Hill cannot properly operate, American Sugar Refining/Belize Sugar Industries Limited (ASR/BSI) is talking to fellow stakeholders about possibly pausing the season which began on December 28.

In a Zoom conference call with reporters this afternoon, Vice President for International Relations for ASR/BSI Mac Maclachlan said the mill received approximately 15 thousand fewer tons of cane than expected in its first week, complicating the smooth running of processing.

Maclachlan explained that poor conditions on sugar roads and some still inundated fields from rains have contributed to the issues.

We’ll have more later on.
