By Aaron Humes: Former Minister of Works Rene Montero and his CEO, Errol Gentle, may face a civil lawsuit for allowing and abetting the use and misuse of Ministry of Works equipment and personnel to develop the ex-Minister’s personal farm and the road leading to it.
Criminal charges may also be in play, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat and his CEO told reporters. The Minister said his office was approached by as many as eight employees who were willing to tell of their knowledge of Montero and Gentle’s actions. While it was not their own making, Espat said, they could not look away from such blatant alleged corruption.
In conjunction with the Attorney General’s Ministry, investigations are on the way that will potentially lead to both civil and criminal prosecution and investigation by the Integrity Commission, which deals with declarations of public assets before, during, and after their terms in office, as well as allegations of misfeasance in public office.
Espat believes this is the tip of the iceberg as to the depth of alleged wrongdoing, but the case also, he says, tests the integrity of the oversight apparatus by providing information to them. It will be up to them to proceed, he said.
