Ex-Works Minister: “I did not take horse racing gate”

Posted: Thursday, January 7, 2021. 8:48 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Backed by legal letters demanding that media houses rescind their allegations linking him to a steel horse racing gate found at a Cayo property on Tuesday, former Minister of Works and Transport Rene Montero told his version of the story in a circulated press statement.

Successor Julius Espat, as Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing, told us when we brought it to his attention that day that it was Montero’s right to defend himself publicly, but that the courts would air out and decide what wrongdoing he did if any. The matter of the gate belongs to the Ministry of Sports, he added.

As for Montero, he contends that the property from which the gate was retrieved is not his, and that the gate had been placed there by Santa Elena’s Horse Racing Committee for safekeeping. While he approached Cayo Steel Works to build the gate and donated the gate to the committee (not the National Sports Council or its district subsidiary), he does not own or asserts any ownership over the gate.

Montero, three-term Cayo Central representative before his defeat last year, says that he and others have worked hard to bring back the sport of horse racing to Santa Elena and the Peter August Stadium, and accuses the current Government of bearing false witness against him and being vindictive.
