By BBN Staff: The United States Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Keith Gilges issued a statement today on the events at Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

Gilges says that American democracy has been tested and was tested again with the assault on the Capitol.

“The U.S. Congress carried out its duties as enshrined in the Constitution to certify the results of the U.S. presidential election. Our institutions have stood strong in support of our democratic principles. In this moment of reflection, we find ourselves shocked and saddened by the unacceptable rioting and lawlessness of those who stormed the Capitol, but proud that the process moved forward, undeterred,” Gilges stated.

Gilges says that as it is being called for by representatives from across the political spectrum, order will be restored and the democratic process will continue.

“President-elect Biden will be inaugurated on January 20. We deeply value our Belizean friends and partners who stand with us in these challenging times and reaffirm our commitment to work on behalf of the American people in support of our deep and enduring partnership with Belize,” Gilges expressed.
