United States sees record number of COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths, during ongoing vaccination efforts

By BBN Staff: The United States is seeing record numbers of people becoming infected, hospitalized, and dying from COVID19 amidst an ongoing national vaccine rollout, Reuters reports.

On Tuesday, COVID-19-related hospitalizations reached a record 130,834, according to a Reuters tally of public health data. Meanwhile, deaths related to the virus stood at 3,684, the second-highest number in a single day since the start of the pandemic.

“That appalling toll meant that on Tuesday someone died from COVID-19 every 24 seconds in the United States. With total deaths surpassing 357,000, one in every 914 U.S. residents has died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began,” Reuters said.

On Wednesday, the US exceeded 21 million confirmed infections, and many healthcare systems are reportedly approaching their breaking point.

The record number of those affected by the virus is happening in tandem with the US rollout of two authorized vaccines from Pfizer Inc with partner BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc; however, their federal government does not have a rollout plan, which has caused delays and other issues with the rollout all over the country.

“The lack of a federal blueprint for the crucial final step of getting the vaccines into tens of millions of arms has left state and local officials in charge of the monumental effort, creating a patchwork of different plans across the United States,” Reuters added.
