New study shows Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine may work against mutation in new variants

Posted: Friday, January 8, 2021. 8:59 am CST.

By BBN Staff: A new study suggests that the Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine may be effective against 2 new coronavirus variants, CNN reports.

According to the report, the 2 viruses share a mutation known as N501Y that scientists worry could allow the virus to evade the immune protection generated by a vaccine.

A version of the virus that carries the mutation was made in a lab.  Researchers tested it against blood taken from 20 people who had received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine as part of a clinical trial.

On Thursday, researchers said that they found “no reduction in neutralization activity” against the mutated virus.

The study was done by researchers at Pfizer and the University of Texas Medical Branch.

It has not been peer-reviewed.

In December, the company issued a statement saying that it had performed similar tests on “multiple mutant strains. To date, we have found consistent coverage of all the strains tested.”

The researchers said that it will be important to continue monitoring the significance of changes.
