By Aaron Humes: The electorate of Orange Walk North turned to the People’s United Party (PUP) and Ramon ‘Monchi’ Cervantes after former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Agriculture, Gaspar Vega, skipped nearly every meeting of the House of Representatives after being fired from the post four years ago.
So, they must have been perplexed to not see Cervantes at Friday’s meeting of the House, continuing an unwanted streak for the division.
But not to worry, said Prime Minister and representative of next-door Orange Walk Central John Briceno: COVID-19 is to blame this time.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration recently contracted the virus and is at home isolated and in recovery.
“I spoke to Minister Cervantes this morning – he called me and asked me to please say a few words on his behalf, which I did; he asked me to thank the people of Orange Walk North for the confidence that they have given to him, and like me he says it is an awesome responsibility and something that he is going to do every single day,” Briceno explained.
As to his health, Briceno said the Minister of State was fighting “piercing”, recurring headaches as part of his struggle with the disease, but is otherwise feeling better and once cleared he will be ready to get back to the work of the people.
