PUP says Elections and Boundaries Commission’s Steve Perrera must go

By Aaron Humes: Recently appointed chair of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC), attorney Estevan “Steve” Perrera, is being asked to stand down by the new John Briceño administration.

It appears that it is not because he mishandled in any way the November 11 general elections – 81 percent of Belizeans turned out to vote, COVID-19 notwithstanding, and there were no questions of improper handling of the system.

Perrera’s sin, the Prime Minister said, their friendship aside, is that he’s with “the other side.”

In the House of Representatives when the matter came up, Briceno said he did not necessarily object to Perrera’s appointment last year despite his being a known supporter of the United Democratic Party. But the appointment to lead the EBC was for five years, and under the current regulations, the Prime Minister names both the chair and two members from the Government and takes the advice of the Opposition for the remaining two members, which keeps the red in control.

Perrera has refused to resign, but Briceño called on him to “do the decent and honest thing…he needs to resign from the Elections and Boundaries Commission.”

Outside the House, Briceño said, “There are other options that we are looking at. But I think Steven Perrera is a good man and he will do the right thing which is to step down from the Elections and Boundaries… I do believe at the end of the day he will; if he doesn’t then we have other options as to what we are going to do.”
