By Aaron Humes: The new National Assembly of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela met in Caracas this week on January 5.
President, Nicolás Maduro, addressed legislators and said, “The time has come for a new exercise for the parliament to force the National Government to render accounts and to find solutions alongside the deputies.” He added that the new parliament must establish “a dialogue of action, to find consensus, solutions and apply them immediately throughout the Republic” and to prioritize the economy. That the blockade, bureaucracy, and corruption be fought to recover the country’s sources of income, as well as the resources and assets stolen or blocked abroad and that are the patrimony of the Venezuelan people.
“A new political era is coming, a new political cycle in the country and we are going to restore the rights of the people,” the President emphasized.
According to Telesur, parliamentarians elected former Communication Minister Jorge Rodriguez as president of the Board of Directors of the Assembly, joined by vice presidents Iris Varela and Didalco Bolivar.
“As of today, we will aim to legislate for Venezuelans. There is no democracy if the rules and the will of the people are not respected,” Rodriguez said after he promised as he was being sworn in to “defend the Constitution, the laws, and the sovereignty of the Nation.”
Opposition lawmakers opposed the new Assembly leadership because they hoped to “have any representation” even though it did not propose alternative candidates. The Board of Directors, however, was approved by a majority.
After the ceremony, lawmakers marched to the Legislative Palace carrying the images of Simon Bolivar and Hugo Chavez. Their pictures were previously removed as a grievance by the outgoing National Assembly.
