By BBN Staff: Pope Francis is calling for peace and a return to a “high sense of responsibility” in the United States following the death of five people during a violent protest at the United States Capitol building in Washington last week, reports the Associated Press.
Pope Francis called for Americans to be “calm souls” as he gave an address from the Apostolic Palace today.
“I offer an affectionate greeting to the people of the United States, shaken by the recent siege of Congress,” the Pope said. “I pray for those who lost their lives, five (persons), in those dramatic moments…Nothing is gained with violence and so much is lost.”
He also called for those in the US to move toward promoting national reconciliation and safeguarding the democratic values rooted in American society.
The violent attack erupted on January 6, following a call from President Donald Trump for his supporters to “fight like hell,” to prevent the ceremonial counting of votes to certify President-Elect Joe Biden’s election win. Trump supporters stormed the capitol building, one man going as far as to steal a podium from the building while on camera.
Four civilians and one Capitol police officer died during the savage exchange.
