Mexican President’s spokesman tests positive for COVID-19, concerns raised over president’s health

Posted: Monday, January 11, 2021. 1:28 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: There are increasing concerns over the health of Mexico’s president  Andrés Manuel López Obrador, after his spokesman  Jesús Ramírez Cuevas tested posititive for COVID-19.

Cuevas tested positive over the weekend and posted to his official Twitter account saying  “I am in good health and I will be working from home.”

The Associated Press notes that Cuevas’ announcement came at the same time Mexico had discovered the new, more contagious, variant of COVID-19 that is currently spreading throughout the United Kingdom (UK).

President  Obrador has consistently appeared in public without a mask and stresses that he does not see the need to wear one. The president’s most recent public statement was on Sunday, January 10, when he toured the Pacific coast seaport of Manzanillo and gave a speech, also without a mask.

He and Cuevas are continually in close proximity and even travel together, raising concerns about whether or not he has been exposed to the virus.

There has been no word from Mexican officials whether or not the president has been tested for COVID-19.
