The United States supports Guyana in territorial dispute with Venezuela

Posted: Monday, January 11, 2021. 3:39 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The United States is supporting Guyana in its territorial dispute with Venezuela after President Nicholas Maduro decreed that the disputed area is Venezuelan territory, reports Loop.

Maduro made the declaration regarding the Guayana Esequiba, the disputed area west of Guyana’s Essequibo River on January 9; however,  Acting Assistant Secretary for US Department of State’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Michael Kozak said that the US supports Guyana and the December 2020 ruling of the International Court of Justice that it has jurisdiction to hear the country’s legal case against Venezuela.

“Maduro’s aggressive claims don’t change this, they only show the world his disregard for his neighbors and international law,” Kozak said.

Notably, the Maduro declaration comes just before the scheduled ICJ meeting to set a date to hear the Guyana-Venezuela case (January 15).

The border dispute between the nations is 120 years old and is the legacy of British colonialism in the region, similar to Belize’s territorial dispute with Guatemala.
