Guns, drugs recovered from stolen vehicle in Corozal

By Aaron Humes: Police are holding a pair of stolen vehicles, one of which contained a package of marijuana and two high-power assault rifles, in Belmopan after they were recovered from the Corozal District.

At the National Police Training Academy grounds in Belmopan on Friday afternoon, officers and a locksmith searched one of the vehicles, a gray Volkswagen Jetta, which had been found in a bushy area off a feeder road in the Corozal District several weeks ago. The guns and drugs – 970 grams of cannabis – were found in this vehicle.

Police cross-checks with Interpol found that it had been stolen in Mexico. The items are designated found property as police have nothing to indicate any Belizean owned the vehicle, much less what was inside it.

A second vehicle was found elsewhere and was also impounded.

But what were the vehicles doing here? ACP Joseph Myvett said they have nothing at this time to indicate they were to be used in illicit trade, but it is possible whoever brought the vehicles may have tried to get them registered here legally, or dismantled to obtain parts.
