Honduran migrants on journey to US, head toward Guatemalan border

Posted: Thursday, January 14, 2021. 10:13 am CST.

By BBN Staff:  Just about 200 Honduran migrants have began their journey to the U.S.A. The Hondurans are now headed toward the Guatemalan border.

The group began walking last night but paused after being confronted by 75 officers in riot gear near San Pedro Sula, The Associated Press reports.

Amidst the pandemic, the migrants waited and then resumed walking.

The campaign on social media was on for weeks encouraging migrants to depart for a new caravan.

Many Hondurans say they are leaving because they are unable to find a job.

Guatemalan President has declared a “state of prevention” along the borders with Honduras.

The decree noted the threat of migrants entering without required documentation and without following pandemic-related screening at the border. Guatemala is requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test. The decree said more than 2,000 national police and soldiers would be stationed at the border.

Meanwhile, Mexican authorities along with other countries have expressed their concern about health risks among migrant groups.

In addition, migrants hope that with a change of administration in the US, they may receive a warmer welcome.
