Police catch women contrabandistas on the move

Posted: Friday, January 15, 2021. 12:19 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A pair of women from Guinea Grass Village, Orange Walk District, appeared in court after being caught illegally crossing the northern border near August Pine Ridge village over the weekend.

The smugglers ran in different directions, but the officers managed to capture and detain 44-year-old Dina Sanchez and 23-year-old Jennifer Garrido, both of Guinea Grass Village.

Police Mobile Interdiction Team was in the area on operation at an illegal landing site near the the village rice field when they saw a large canoe entering a channel, loaded with uncustomed goods.

The persons inside the canoe were unloading the goods when the officers identified themselves.

The officers recovered vegetables and other food items, sodas, alcoholic beverages, clothing and other household products. The officers also found an abandoned blue pickup truck. The truck, the items, the 16-foot canoe, and the two detainees were all taken to the Orange Walk Customs House pending charges.

Police leadership had visited the North earlier in 2020 to warn against the dangers of contraband during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the business is very lucrative and so it continues more covertly.
