Attorney General: ‘Time to change priorities’

Posted: Monday, January 18, 2021. 1:23 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In her first time addressing the Supreme Court, Attorney General Senior Counsel Magali Marin-Young says there is now hope to change and reform the Judiciary.

A promised doubling of judicial resources may not be fully implemented this year, she said, as a result of current financial straits, but is in the pipeline. She added that over the last 12 years, too much was spent on vanity legal fees for private attorneys and not enough on fixing the halls of justice, subject to rats, roaches, and all other manner of vermin. The delays and mishandling has affected litigants at all levels, for whom justice delayed has become justice denied.

Facilities in Orange Walk will now be replaced and those in Belize City and Dangriga repaired.

The new administration proposes to create specialized courts, such as commercial and constitutional law, and to reduce the role of the Chief Justice to one of administration, supervision of judicial conduct and so on, and build a ‘Hall of Justice’ in Belize City for all levels of the system.

The plans to introduce time limits for judgments is necessary to repair the delays caused, and the Court of Appeal will be redirected to a year-round schedule in two defined divisions, civil and criminal.

E-governance will be applied to filings at Supreme Court level and the Attorney General called on the Bench and Bar to help put their shoulders to the wheel of justice.
