Incoming Biden administration says migrant caravan issue will take time to resolve

Posted: Monday, January 18, 2021. 11:20 am CST.

By BBN Staff: NBC News is reporting that the incoming administration of President-elect of the United States Joe Biden, has been monitoring the Honduran migrant caravan attempting to reach the US, but says that it will need time to address the issue.

In an exclusive interview, a senior official on Biden’s transition team said that migrants should not head for the US as yet, as the incoming administration will need time to get the necessary policies and structures in place to address immigration issues facing the US.

“The situation at the border isn’t going to be transformed overnight,” the official said.

Migrant advocacy groups within the US such as Pueblo Sin Fronteras, say that they will be advocating for the Biden administration to keep its promises and do away with strict immigration policies enacted by President Donald Trump.

The New York Post quotes the organization as saying that the Biden administration needs to “dismantle illegal and inhuman programs such as Remain in Mexico, the United States’ Asylum Cooperation Agreements with El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, as well as the Title 42 expulsions by the United States authorities.”

The migrant caravan, an estimated 9,000 people, arrived in Guatemala on Friday and were met by security forces in riot gear. The situation escalated quickly resulting in people being beaten with batons and tear gas being fired at crowds.

The governments of Guatemala and Mexico have declared that they will be cracking down on migrants over COVID-19  pandemic concerns.
