80 persons fired from working at bus terminals; no reasons given

Posted: Tuesday, January 19, 2021. 8:06 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: A total of eighty employees forming the cadre of the various terminal management units countrywide found themselves out of a job on George Price Day, last Friday.

One of the letters issued to the workers we have seen in social media seems sterile in form. It indicates that the worker’s services are no longer needed and are therefore terminated with effect from Saturday, January 16, and continues to go into detail about their length of service, assurance of payment of severance where applicable, and closing with best wishes. Absent is any formal explanation of why their services are no longer needed. Each letter is personally signed by the Chief Executive Officer Marconi Leal, Jr.

The bloodbath was heaviest in Belize City, the public transportation hub, with 25 employees gone from their posts at the old Novelos’ Bus Terminal on West Collet Canal and King Street. Belmopan, the second-most active terminal, saw 16 workers terminated; Orange Walk dropped 13; ten were sent home from Independence/Mango Creek; eight from Corozal, seven from Dangriga and one from Punta Gorda, according to UDP organ The Guardian.

The Guardian claims the fired workers will be replaced by PUP supporters, a notion bolstered by the reaction of confused and angry ex-employees who spoke to Channel 7 News.

One said the workers were called into a meeting that afternoon, handed their letters in envelopes and told to go straight home – and bring in their uniforms the following day.

Those who spoke publicly insist they were supporters of the blue, or non-partisan, though it didn’t matter in the final analysis.

The Ministry in charge – transport now falls under the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics – has so far remained silent.

We’ll keep following the story.
