By BBN Staff: This week, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has reported the lowest numbers of COVID-19 infections since the start of the year, a fact that Belize Progressive Party (BPP) says is the product of the measures currently in place.
The BPP issued a statement of support for the current measures that the Government of Belize has in place, and also called that more be done to address high-risk health and safety issues within the public transportation sector.
“The BPP believes that having the curfew in effect plays a major role in the decline of cases. We would like to congratulate the government for having this curfew and also commend the people of Belize for adhering to the health and safety protocols,” the party said.
The party says it would support GOB taking a position to extend the curfew. The BPP’s Will Maheia said that the party acknowledges the potential economic fallout from businesses having to close early; however, the trade-off for decreased cases and deaths due to COVID-19 is worth the sacrifice.
“The public needs to understand that this about lives, and saving lives. Belizean lives matter,” Maheia said.
The BPP also calls on the public to continue practicing social distancing, frequent hand washing, and the wearing of masks in public spaces.
