State Funeral for Belize’s 1st Governor General to be held today

By BBN Staff: A state funeral for Belize’s 1st Governor General, Dr. Dame Minita Gordon will be held today.

An Ecumenical Service will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist, Belize City.

A procession will begin at the base of the Swing Bridge on North Front Street at 9:15 a.m. for the service at 10:00 a.m.

Prime Minister, John Briceno also requests that churches across Belize mark this solemn occasion by tolling church bells at 9:30 a.m. to signal the start of the State Funeral Procession.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event is closed to the public.

The public is invited to view live coverage of the event via the Facebook page of the Government of Belize Press Office or via live television broadcasts from all major media houses.

Gordon served as Belize’s first Governor-General from 1981 to 1993. Notably, she is the first woman in the Commonwealth to assume the role.
