Government of Belize suspends paid study leave for teachers

Posted: Thursday, January 21, 2021. 12:50 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize announced today that it has indefinitely suspended paid study leave for teachers.

The announcement came via an official memo from the Ministry of Education’s Chief Education Officer, Yolanda Gongora.

Gongora sent the memo to the Belize Teaching Services Commission, as well as managing authorities of government and government-aided schools.

The suspension is in effect for pre-primary, primary, secondary, and tertiary schools.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused heightened fiscal scrutiny and financial prudence which has caused the Ministry to re-examine its financial prospects with a view to prioritize expenditure and reallocate resources as necessary,” Gongora explained.

She added that the suspension will remain in place until further notice.
