Christian Workers Union to Belize City Council: we can’t wait until after the elections

Posted: Friday, January 22, 2021. 2:43 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Christian Workers Union (CWU) is demanding that the Belize City Council address the pending collective bargaining agreement which is more than a year overdue.

The CWU said that it forwarded its proposal to the council back in October 2019, so being asked to wait until after the March municipal elections are unreasonable.

“Our letter, co-signed by one hundred and eighty-five of our BCC Members, rejects the proposed date of March 31st from the Council. The Union and its members have exercised patience over the last 15 months, awaiting and fairly expecting to have this very routine and standard feature of CBA negotiations to be honored,” the CWU said.

The CWU noted that it has repeatedly inquired, both formally and informally, about the agreement, as there are concerns such as the transfer of union representatives employed at the council.

“In the last ten weeks, three of our Reps have been transferred, without any prior notice to CWU. While we have no jurisdiction over who is transferred, we have consistently expressed to the Council that to move around our Reps without prior notification and consultation contravenes the present CBA,” the Union added.

The union formally shared these grievances with the Labor Department and the Ministry of Labor, last week, saying that it will fight against treatment that is “unfair or disrespectful.”
