By BBN Staff: Mesopotamia Area Representative Moses “Shyne” Barrow is calling on the Government of Belize to make the necessary adjustments to be able to offer food assistance to all Belizeans that have applied.

At a press conference held by the opposition United Democratic Party, Barrow challenged the Minister of Human Development, Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, following her announcement that the government will be limiting the number of recipients due to limited resources. Barrow stressed that, given the ongoing curfew, people are losing an opportunity to make money, so they need assistance from the government.

“Under the current state of emergency, these things are necessary, these things are vital,” Barrow said.  ” Under these circumstances where you are going to have curfews that restrict the operation of businesses…how will the people provide for themselves.”

Barrow also said that GOB has failed to provide a transparent timeline as to when they will lift the curfew. He also criticized the Briceno administration’s prioritizing infrastructure at a time where people are in need of assistance.

“They found 14 million to fix streets that we can’t eat….” Barrow added. “We don’t need no streets right here and now, that is not urgent…those other millions of dollars could go to the people who are unemployed, because of COVID-19.”

He went as far as to say that GOB’s handling of the social assistance is a violation of Belizeans’ human rights.
