By BBN Staff: Keeping with campaign promises to tackle the issue of climate change, United States President Joe Biden took steps this week to rejoin the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, that his predecessor Donald Trump had withdrawn from.

The agreement united around 200 countries in an effort to lower global carbon emissions that cause climate change. The aim of each country reducing their carbon emissions is to prevent average temperatures from rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius, to avoid raising global heat levels to unsustainable heights. The agreement also calls upon richer countries to help developing countries adapt to the effects of climate change.

Biden sent a letter to the United Nations after taking office on Wednesday, agreeing to the terms laid out in the document triggering a process that will see the US re-enter the agreement in 30 days. Biden’s plan to tackle climate change include putting the US on a path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, which scientists say could have significant implications for the 1.5C target.

The US’s withdrawal from the agreement was made official on November 4, 2020, notably, the day after Trump initially lost the general election. He contended that the agreement was unfair to the US because countries such as China and India were still using fossil fuels.

The BBC notes that the US, which has historically released more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than any other nation, is the only one to have withdrawn. Biden says he intends to restore the US as a world leader in climate action.
