By BBN Staff: During the Minister of Agriculture’s tour of the Western Dairies facility on the 21st of January, the managers of the plant made it clear that they were aware of the concern of Belizeans in regards to the shelf life of their products. Western Dairies is a local Belizean owned and operated company that is faced with an uphill battle of being compared to international branded products in the eyes of Belizean consumers. The one complaint which is brought up time and time again by Belizean consumers is that which focuses on the ‘short’ shelf life of the fresh milk produced by Western Dairies.
That was one of the first topics publicly discussed during the tour between Minister of Agriculture, Jose Abelardo Mai and Western Dairies Marketing Manager, Armando Estrada. While the company is aware of, and validates the concern of consumers, they also saw it important to note that their products are fresh and natural. This means that there are no harmful additives and that the consumer of their products can easily look at product labels and identify exactly what their contents are. This is usually not the case for most popular international products whose labels often contain chemicals and preservatives with names that cannot be pronounced or even identified.
The point is, Western Dairies take their product from the source to the shelves ensuring quality, safety and prioritizing the health and wellness of its consumers. The sole fact that some dairy products from international competitors can last on shelves for months should show consumers that whatever is in there making them last that long is clearly not healthy. In fact, imported UHT milk is actually only about 20% dairy milk and is loaded with bulk imitation additives that include corn oil and other saturated oils.
The Chairman of Western Dairies, Ernie Wolfe and the Marketing Manager, Armando Estrada, made it clear that Western Dairies will be exploring all available options to extend the shelf life of their products in a safe and healthy way. While this is expected to take some time, it is important to note that the comments from consumers have been heard, understood and the company is actively seeking to rectify this. In addition, Chairman Wolfe noted that the company is actively looking at beginning to produce a line of ultra high temperature (UHT) packaged milk that would have a much longer shelf life and would be able to stand side by side with imported UHT milk.
