Thieves hit Sadie Vernon Technical for Ministry of Education tablets

Posted: Saturday, January 23, 2021. 2:28 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Sometime this week, thieves struck at Sadie Vernon Technical High School, removing 100 educational tablets that were intended for use by second and third formers starting on Monday.

The tablets were procured by Patrick Faber’s Ministry of Education last year for the purpose of distance learning for secondary schools starting in October, and schools around the country were handed the tablets later that month in advance of general elections.

According to Channel 7 News, the thieves cut the chain-link fence to enter the school compound on Partridge Street during curfew hours and broke into the secretary’s office through a removed louver window, removing the digital video recorder (DVR) device capturing footage from the school security cameras for good measure.

Teaching Vice Principal of Sadie Vernon, a government-run institution, Abigail Hoare, revealed to Channel 7 that the school has continued service to the community during the pandemic by providing regular food packages in addition to teaching from distance. She says they must now refocus their conserved finances on repairing the damage.

“And it’s unfortunately that there are individuals in our community that are just trying to find, quote-unquote, the easy way to eat and sell people’s properties so that they can make some easy money while children are being deprived of what they need for their education,” Hoare added.

Police have reviewed their own surveillance and made several arrests, recovering three more tablets, but the majority remain missing.

A family member of one suspect told Channel 7 that police used excessive force on her relative whom she vouched for as being at home all morning. When she started video recording police beating him up, one officer alleged threw a glass of water at the phone and then another glass at her face.

The school is now appealing to the public to keep an eye out for the stolen tablets Logic 10.1-inch devices with accessories, and report what they know to police in the hopes that they can recover more devices.
