“Call me,” Peyrefitte tells Government on Superbond restructuring

Posted: Sunday, January 24, 2021. 8:00 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The John Briceño administration has signaled its intent to ask holders of the 2034 Belize Bonds, known as “the Superbond” to take a haircut or reduction of the principal payment.

Such a negotiation would be the fourth in a decade, but the Prime Minister has said it is absolutely necessary.

On Wednesday, offering his help in the process was former Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte, who was part of the negotiation team in two previous restructurings, most recently in 2016.

The ex-A.G. told reporters, “You would have to ask the creditors if they have any trust or confidence in this PUP government. I know for sure they had it in our government and when we were a part of restructuring the bond twice. … I will be here to tell you that I put country above everything else.”

But Peyrefitte is skeptical, to say the least, that the Government will humble itself and approach him. Nonetheless, he says his services are available for free, as they were previously.
