U.S. confirms reversals on COVAX, WHO

Posted: Sunday, January 24, 2021. 7:01 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The United States of America has done a complete U-turn on two critical issues in its fight against COVID-19, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, Chief Medical Adviser to the new U.S. President, Joe Biden.

Dr. Fauci, addressing the WHO’s Executive Board meeting held virtually on Thursday according to Barbados Today, confirmed President Biden intended to issue a directive within hours so that the country can become part of the COVAX platform to advance multilateral efforts to distribute coronavirus vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.

Even as global infections from COVID-19 surpassed 90 million with at least one million dead, Dr. Fauci said medical counter-measures were developed with phenomenal speed and adaptation to treat the stricken.

In breaking with the isolationist doctrine of his former boss, President Donald Trump, Dr. Fauci noted that responding to COVID-19 and “rebuilding global health and advancing health security” worldwide, “will not be easy.” But the U.S., he added, was committed to transparency in finding out what started the outbreak and learning lessons from it.

Dr. Fauci made further commitments to work with other countries on HIV/AIDS, food security, malaria and epidemic preparedness, including rolling back federal policy that blocks funding for organizations that provide counseling on abortion and abortion-related services, and to reform the WHO itself as it will cease drawing down staff, resume engagement between U.S. Government and WHO personnel, and fulfill financial obligations.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed Washington back to the “family fold,” pledging the supranational organization’s commitment to support the U.S. with “with science, solutions, solidarity and service.”
