Mexican President López Obrador tests positive for COVID-19

Posted: Monday, January 25, 2021. 8:18 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The BBC confirmed on Sunday that Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 67, has tested positive for COVID-19.

He tweeted that his symptoms were mild and that he was optimistic of recovery following the diagnosis. He will continue working from home, including speaking to Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin today, Monday, about acquiring Russian-made vaccine Sputnik V.

The two leaders will be discussing their bilateral relationship and supplying up to 12 million doses of the vaccine, if Mexican authorities approve.

According to the BBC, officials want to expand the country’s vaccination program for the population of 128 million people amid delivery delays from Pfizer-BioNTech.

Sputnik V has already received authorisation in a number of other countries, including Brazil and Argentina. Hungary became the first in the European Union to give it the green light this week.

The development comes as Mexico grapples with an upsurge in infections, with deaths nearing 150,000.

José Luis Alomia Zegarra, a senior health official, described López Obrador’s condition as stable and told a news briefing that “a team of medical specialists” were attending to the president.

Mexico has recorded more than 1.75 million virus cases since the pandemic began, according to Johns Hopkins University tracking. Its confirmed death toll of 149,614 is fourth highest in the world – behind only neighbours the United States, Brazil and India.
