By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Sports says it did not, and will not, sanction training for the national football selection of Belize, the Jaguars, which training was apparently ongoing earlier this week.
In a statement, the Ministry said Police were called to an area outside of Belmopan, known as Banana Bank, where they found 25 young men playing football contrary to the Quarantine Regulations.
Dale Pelayo, the recently appointed national team head coach, claimed the training was sanctioned by the Ministry, which caused Police to check with them.
While a tough decision to make, the Ministry says it supports not playing football, a full-contact sport, at this time due to the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It advises Belizeans to keep off the pitch and follow the regulations until such time.
The Jaguars are scheduled to play in World Cup qualification for 2022 at some point this year, while the Premier League of Belize and other tournaments are still outstanding.
