Tourist held by police for not wearing mask shakes off ordeal in a video

Posted: Tuesday, January 26, 2021. 1:27 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The female American tourist detained by Police on Saturday has spoken out, saying she has been reassured enough that her ordeal will not be repeated that she is prepared to invest in the country and return many more times to come.

In a video posted by Ambergris Today, the tourist, who identifies herself as “Cher,” offers her thanks to the people of San Pedro Town and Caye Caulker for their support. She says she and her husband and brother who accompanied her were “very shocked” by what happened, but says “we are still committed to exploring investment opportunities in the country and forming new and stronger bonds with the people of Belize.”

She also thanked the “Ministerial Cabinet,” specifically, Belize Rural South representative and Minister of Civil Aviation and the Blue Economy Andre Perez, for reaching out, listening and assuaging concerns, and ensuring she knew Belizeans are in her corner and working to avoid a repeat. She concludes that this, her first trip to Belize, will not be her last.

The Minister told Ambergris Today that he and his wife visited with “Cher” at the Aji Bella Vista resort restaurant on Monday and after their discussion, she was left mollified.

Meanwhile, the Police Department has said its officers on the island will receive customer care training related to tourism, but there is no acknowledgment of wrongdoing on the officers’ part, as the tourist was by the letter of the law is wrong. However, the Department officially exercises discretion in such situations.
