By Aaron Humes: The new COVID-19 education task force announced today will guide the Government of Belize’s commitment to delivering quality and accessible education during the ongoing pandemic, and more importantly, decide when schools re-open for face-to-face learning.

Its membership includes Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Education, Dian Castillo Maheia; newly appointed Special Envoy for Development of Families and Children and Principal of St. Peter’s Anglican School in Orange Walk Town, Rossana Briceno; Senators Isabel Bennett and Elena Smith, the latter the president of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU); Acting Director of Health Services Dr. Melissa Diaz Musa; Martine King of organization Mind Health Connect; the principals of Belize City high schools St. Catherine Academy (Salome Tillett) and Belize High School (Jamie Usher); president of the National Student Union of Belize (NSUB), Kevin Chen, and a representative to be named from the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU).

As of now, a re-opening date appears to be boiled down to “August/September 2021” according to a statement issued today, with a further caveat of “when it is deemed safe to do so by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

But schools will, eventually, re-open, the Government assured, with the input of stakeholders such as the (BNTU); school principals, administrators, teachers, parents, and even students.

The task force will operate between February and July.
