Afro hair style ‘hairdo’ causes controversy at Belmopan City Council

Posted: Wednesday, January 27, 2021. 3:20 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A post made recently made by Anna Banner Guy about natural hair has gone viral on social media. It is a post which has upset many, and brought about a wave of pictures flooding social media with women showcasing their natural hair. The story behind Anna Banner Guy’s post is one which highlights the experience of her grand niece, Cheyenne Banner, at the Belmopan City Council where she works in the Human Resources (HR) department.

Cheyenne Banner’s attention was allegedly called by the HR manager who then reportedly told her that, “multiple calls from the tax paying community of Belmopan complaining that she does not look professional to work there and so she was told that her hair HAS GOT TO GO.” as written in the caption of the now viral post.

During a conversation between our team and Anna Banner Guy, she told us that Cheyenne Banner, her grand-niece, feels targeted and discriminated against for something she cannot help. Banner is a black woman that proudly rocks her hair in an afro hairdo. An afro is a natural growth of curly textured hair, in any length kinky hair texture, or specifically styled with chemical curling products by individuals with naturally curly or straight hair.

Banner Guy also allowed told us that her niece is fearful of losing her job especially in these trying times where a pandemic is plaguing the world and making jobs hard to come by. Her niece is still in shock and disbelief, but  Banner Guy allowed said that she reassured Cheyenne that her story had to be made public in order to bring light to ‘a real situation that happens too often’. She also mentioned that, “If you cover it up, how will you ever get any justice.” Banner Guy indicated that Cheyenne Banner has authorized her to speak on her behalf and bring awareness to the fact that people of color do possess different hair textures and embracing one’s true self is nothing to be looked down on. She hopes that through bringing awareness to this unfortunate experience, they help to educate the public on real issues faced by real Belizeans.
