By BBN Staff: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration, Eamon Courtenay, said this week that the Government of Belize’s legal team is “hard at work” in preparing Belize’s arguments for the territorial dispute claim against Guatemala at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Courtenay said that Guatemala has formally submitted its memorial as to what portion of Belize’s terrestrial and maritime areas is being claimed, and it is now up to Belize to file a counter-memorial. The content of this memorial will not be made public at this phase in the proceedings.
He noted that having read the memorial and conducted an exhaustive meeting with the legal team, he is “quite confident” that Belize can prepare a counter-memorial which will lead to Belize retaining all its land, sea territory, and islands. Courtenay stressed, however, that the legal team has advised him not to speak publicly on the content of Guatemala’s memorial.
Belize has until June 8, 2022, to present its counter-memorial.
