Opposition’s Shadow Ministry of Education condemns new COVID-19 Education Taskforce

Posted: Wednesday, January 27, 2021. 2:30 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Shortly after the Government of Belize announced the establishment of its new COVID-19 Education Task Force, the Opposition United Democratic Party, condemned it due to the people involved.

The UDP’s Shadow Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, issued a statement on Tuesday saying that the people selected for the task force do not properly represent the education sector. The opposition stresses that school managements and tertiary institutions, as well as technical and vocational learning institutions, are not represented on the task force, which is a disservice to the education sector as a whole.

“The composition reflects persons who are clueless about the realities of the average and the most disadvantaged Belizean student. This COVID-19 Task Force as it is constituted, is blue highlighter used to show up the incestuous nature of this administration’s way of doing things,” the UDP said.  “In tandem with PLANBELIZE’s Good Governance Motion, we call on the Government to reconstitute the Covid-19 Education Task Force to make it more geographically balanced and representative of the stakeholders in education,” the party added.

The opposition also criticized the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU) calling the organization “mute” and stressing that the union had failed to advocate for the teachers with pending retirements.

Despite its criticisms, the UDP says that it stands ready to take a bipartisan approach and become a part of the task force to ensure that all Belizeans benefit from its work.
