Taiwan shows battle-readiness following a weekend incursion by China

Posted: Wednesday, January 27, 2021. 9:40 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Republic of China (Taiwan) showed its readiness to combat Chinese incursions this week when it conducted a drill to show how fast fighter jets could be deployed when notified of an incursion, Reuters reports.

Taiwan held the drill on Tuesday, after a daring move by China over the weekend, deploying more than 20 aircraft of different types, including eight bombers with nuclear strike capability, into the southwestern part of Taiwan’s air defense identification zone.

The drill showed that two F-CK-1 Ching-kuo Indigenous Defence Fighters (IDF), could be scrambled in as little as five minutes to intercept Chinese air force planes. Reuters also notes that Taiwan’s fighters deploy with a combination of armed guns, US-made sidewinder missiles, and Taiwanese Sky Sword missiles when conducting interception operations.

Colonel Lee Ching-shi also told Reuters that Taiwan remains ready and can respond “at any time” in the event of a threat.

“We will not give up one inch of our territory,” the Colonel said.

On Saturday, China deployed eight bombers with nuclear strike capability into Taiwan’s identification zone and sent another 16 aircraft on Sunday. The act of intimidation prompted a show of support from the US, which has in recent years supplied Taiwan with billions of dollars worth of weapons.

“We urge Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan’s democratically elected representatives,” said Ned Price, a spokesman for the US State Department.

Taiwan obtained its independence from China after the 1949 civil war. Since then, China has vowed to reclaim Taiwan as its own territory and said that it is willing to use force if necessary.
