By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing issued a release today explaining that it had issued a cease and desist order to the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council in respect to further mining at the Ministry’s quarry on mile 70 on the George Price Highway.
The Ministry says that it had applied and was granted sole access to the quarry in full compliance with Belize Mines and minerals act.
“Since 2013, the SISE town council has locked the entrance and prevented the Ministry’s personnel and equipment from accessing its own quarry to source material thus increasing the Ministry’s operational costs to carry out its primary and maintenance obligations in the surrounding villages,” the ministry noted.
The Ministry said that despite repeated reminders to coordinate mining activities with the ministry, the town council continues to operate illegally and allow private entities unlimited access to quarry.
The Ministry said that after repeated attempts to have the town council conduct mining activities in compliance with the laws of the country, the order was issued.
