NGO Senator Osmany Salas: “…blame can be thrown all around”

Posted: Thursday, January 28, 2021. 12:15 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Senator for Non-Governmental Organizations, Osmany Salas, concedes that Governments are obligated to “get as creative as possible” to settle the debt situation, including that to Lord Michael Ashcroft’s concerns, loath as he was to even mention his name.

But he questioned whether we understand that we have done too much of kicking the can down the road for future generations. “It is highly irresponsible and blame can be thrown all around as to why we are, where we are,” he pointed out, reminding that the PUP created the problem of Universal Health Services by not taking on the company; and the UDP’s “obstinacy” made it balloon further because of disregard of the final judgments on the UHS case.

166 countries to date, including all of our Central American neighbours and a majority in the Caribbean, have preceded Belize in ratification of the motion of international arbitration.

Senator Salas re-assured that contrary to Michael Peyrefitte’s assertions, the spigot will not be opened and millions upon millions paid out, because under the Finance and Audit (Reform) Act, the matter has to be brought back to the House of Representatives, and the Convention law sets out a process for that.

The Senator admitted he “felt sorry” for any Government that believed it could approve such payments without serious public outrage; but he added that COVID-19 has thrown into stark relief the need for negotiations in adding debt by way of borrowing.
