PAHO Director: Over 1 million COVID-19 deaths in the Americas

Posted: Thursday, January 28, 2021. 6:04 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported this week, that more than 1 million people have died from COVID-19 in the Americas.

PAHO Director, Carissa F. Etienne, lamented the milestone on Wednesday, noting that the deaths exceed the populations of many major cities in the region.

She went on to say “the weight of the loss is incalculable,” and noted that over 44 million people in the Americas have now been infected.

“One million people with hopes, dreams, and a future cut short. One million mourning families – many unable to say goodbye – who will feel their absence forever. The scars and the lessons of this pandemic will stay with us,” Etienne said.

She also said that the loss of a million lives is made worse by the fact that the pandemic has ravaged health systems, fractured social protections, and destabilized economies. The pandemic dealt a major blow to regional health systems, as over 1 million health workers were infected by COVID-19 and at least 4,000 of them have died.

This has caused countries to prioritize dispensing of vaccines, when they finally arrive, to healthcare workers and other frontliners.

“Broad access to vaccines represents our way out of this pandemic, but while supplies are limited, we need to focus on preventing new infections now to keep the virus under control,” Etienne added.
