U.S. Charge d’ Affaires explains quarantine recommendations for travelers to the U.S.

By BBN Staff: New measures for travelers entering the United States of America became effective on January 26, 2021.

Travelers entering the U.S. are now required to present a negative COVID-19 test before boarding. In addition, all arriving passengers to the US are being advised to quarantine for 10 days.

The recommendations by the Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) caused some scramble in Caribbean destinations trying to find ways to best accommodate American tourists visiting, to cater for COVID-19 tests on departures.

Belize’s Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Belize Tourism Board has issued a list of public and private testing sites for travelers, all with a cost of around US $50 to $125 US.

In an interview with News 5, U.S. Charge d’ Affaires, Keith Gilges explained the new recommendations being made by the Biden administration.

Gilges said that the US has surpassed 400,000 deaths, averaging about 3,000 deaths per day which makes it a scary situation.

“So the administration released a comprehensive strategy. One part of that was to say frankly don’t travel. And that was the guidance. You shouldn’t travel unless it is entirely necessary. If you are going to travel, when you come to re-enter the United States, you will need to take a COVID test and show that you are negative before you board a plane. It is a little bit different than what Belize is doing. Belize let’s you board the plane and then come down and then you either show a test or get tested. So in many ways that’s no different. Now, the part about quarantining; that is guidance. Those are recommendations. The CDC recommends that you get tested before you travel,” Gilges explained.
