United Democratic Party stands with vice-chairman Alberto August

By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is standing by its vice-chairman and former chairman, Alberto August, as party chairman Michael Peyrefitte says he will not lose sleep over the contemplations of the Police Department.

August faces arrest and charges in his native San Ignacio on Friday for the offence of “spreading false news.”

August, a former newspaper publisher turned political and election official, is accused of incorrectly claiming the victim of a traffic accident in November was a victim of alleged police brutality.

But August allegedly doubled down, saying police were being “forced” to arrest him and not members of the press who also made inaccurate reports.

And he challenged Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, suggesting he has too many skeletons in his own closet to be taking him on in order to satisfy his political bosses.

Peyrefitte would not comment on this, except to say that August has his own opinion to which he is entitled; the chairman himself avoids social media but advised that no one should have “thin skin” by now and admits he would say worse if he were on social media himself.

But the party chairman contends that the People’s United Party needs distractions, “witch-hunts” and “red herrings” to deflect away from their poor performance, in the UDP’s view, to date, to the point where party stalwarts are not running for the municipal election and the Prime Minister has not given a full press conference since he took office (he has been available for several media interviews however).
