U.S. reaffirms support for Taiwan amidst heightened tensions with China

By BBN Staff: The United States has pledged support for Taiwan amidst heightened tensions with China.

China reportedly flew warplanes near the island just days ago heightening tensions.

China had warned that Independence for Taiwan “means war,” the BBC reports.

The new US administration has reaffirmed their commitment to Taiwan.

The US has since referred to China’s warning as “unfortunate”.

While Taiwan recognizes itself as a sovereign state, with its own leaders and constitution, China views Taiwan as a breakaway province.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen has always said that Taiwan is an Independence state.

Since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, China and Taiwan have had separate governments.

But, Beijing has attempted to limit Taiwan’s international activities.
