Between a rock and a hard place as allies spar: Belize sides with Guyana in Venezuela sea conflict

Posted: Saturday, January 30, 2021. 12:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize stuck to principle in its response to the recent Guyana-Venezuela sea conflict, according to Foreign Minister Eamon Courtenay, despite our friendly relations with both countries.

Like Belize and Guatemala, the countries are engaged in a territorial dispute, which Guyana has supported Belize on.

Courtenay said he told his Venezuelan counterpart this week that while the issue was difficult to decide on, “we firmly rejected the actions of the Government of Venezuela; we immediately called for the return of those two vessels, and the fishermen. We believe that those vessels, based on what we are told by the Government of Guyana, were in Guyanese waters, and that the Venezuelans broke international law by going into their waters.”

Guyana, Courtenay added, was also being supported by the United States, the Organization of American States (OAS) and CARICOM, and called for a “prompt, peaceful resolution” of the issue.
