Brazil’s neighbors implement travel restrictions to halt spread of new coronavirus strain

Posted: Saturday, January 30, 2021. 10:16 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The neighbor countries of Brazil are implementing travel restrictions to halt the spread of the new strain of coronavirus, the Associated Press reports.

On Friday,  Guyana closed its border with Brazil, only 2 days after Colombia halted passenger flights to and from Brazil.

The number of flights to Brazil from Argentina have been cut in half beginning February 1.

While on January 26, Peru banned air traffic from Brazil.

The restrictions come as one of the Amazon’s rainforest largest cities is the site of the variant’s outbreak.

Hospitals are packed to capacity and this month, oxygen stocks were depleted.

There is growing alarm surrounding the spread of the new variant of coronavirus in Brazil since the viruses are constantly mutating.

The Brazilian variant was first identified in four travelers who had been in Brazil and were tested at an airport outside Tokyo, Japan.

Officials in Bolivia and Venezuela have not yet announced any recent changes to their restrictions.
