By BBN Staff: While on his two-day southern tour of agricultural producers, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security & Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, made a visit to a unique vegetable farm in Toledo Village. The farm is owned by Hearson Blandon, a local resident. Farming is actually just a hobby for Mr. Blandon and his full-time occupation is as a nurse. Following formal introductions and a brief discussion about the farm, Minister Mai joked that if more Belizeans would take up farming as a hobby, the country would be well fed.
Herson’s farm has been in existence for a little over 2 years. The farm offers a wide assortment of mixed vegetables such as peppers, lettuce, cucumber, cilantro, and much more. What makes Herson’s farm so unique is the fact that vegetable farming is not very common in Toledo. In fact, his farm may be one of the very few in existence in the area. Blandon did note that it has not been a walk in the park. Instead, his first year was met by many challenges, which served as a learning curve for him. However, his second year is shaping up to be a great one, he told officials on the tour.
Blandon also added that he is hopeful that the years ahead will only get better. The initiative inspires locals far and near, and proves that there is a path that leads to self-sufficiency. Blandon has taken up that path and it can be replicated by others with time, dedication, and a lot of patience, Blandon explained.
