By Aaron Humes: Following elections on Friday, January 22, the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) has a new executive body.
The new president, replacing Dr. Pio Saqui, is Erica Aguilar. There are two vice-presidents representing faculty and staff respectively – Timothy Dami and Germaine Williams. The General Secretary is Dr. Maxine McKay; member for communication and membership is Lynmara Rosado; treasurer is Jair Valladarez and union advisor is Dr. Romaldo Lewis.
The newest trade union conducted the election, held virtually, under the observation of members of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) Dean Flowers and Elena Smith, respectively vice-president of the Public Service Union (PSU) and president of the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU).
The Union made sure to thank the outgoing executive for their stellar service, contributions and milestones attained and congratulate the newly elected members, who have exhibited courage to take on the baton.
The Union was formed in 2020 in the wake of conflict with the leadership of the University over internal restructuring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It succeeds the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Association (UBFSA).
