By BBN Staff: Today, the alcaldes and deputy alcaldes took up tenure for the new year 2021-2022 in 39 Maya Villages in Belize.

The Maya villages of southern Belize have a long-standing system of governance that is led by Alcaldes and Deputy Alcaldes.

The Alcaldes serve for a term of two years and are elected by the Maya village and appointed by the Attorney General of Belize.

For the term 2021-2022, 78 alcaldes and deputy alcaldes were elected to serve.

On January 30, 2021, the assembly of Alcaldes under the Toledo Alcaldes Association gathered to elect a new executive leadership.

The new executive will be led by Domingo Bah of Santa Ana Village.

Supporting him will be Alcaldes Sylvestre Peck, Mateo Chub, Pedro Tush, Diego Oh, Miguel Choko and Seferino Pop.

The new members pledged to uphold Maya customary law and be the ears, eyes and mouth of the Maya people.

The Alcaldes took their oath of allegiance and appointment instrument from Attorney General, Magali Marin Young.

The Attorney General was supported by the Commissioner of the Supreme Court Paul Mahung.

Minister of Community Development, Rural Transformation, Labour and Local Government Oscar Requena spoke to the Alcaldes on the important role that they play, pledging the support of his ministry to the Alcaldes.

“The Alcaldes, under the Toledo Alcaldes Association are the highest authority to uphold and defend Maya customary law and protectors of the interest of the Maya people,” a statement from the Maya Leaders explained.
