By Anita Nembhard-Flowers (court reporter): Jervis Diamond was shot four times last week in a daylight murder attempt. Police have since charged one man, Diamondโs own cousin Kareem Anthony Kelly, 21, for the crime; however, Diamond reportedly says he does not want any court action.
On Monday, Kelly appeared in the Belize City Magistrateโs court in front of Magistrate Stephanie Gillett on charges of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm, all indictable offenses. Before the charges could be read to him, Kelly declared that Diamond wanted to drop the charges through his attorney, but was unable to do so because he is still in the hospital recovering from the shooting.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Noel Muschamp then explained to Kelly, that if Diamond wants to drop the charges, he must go to the police station accompanied by an attorney and make a formal request to drop the charges.
Since that request had not been filed, the court remanded Kelly to the Belize Central Prison until March 29.
Police say that the incident is a result of internal gang rivalry in the Mayflower Street area.
