By BBN Staff: Today, Belize’s education sector is bidding its final farewell to a woman who dedicated more than 30 years of her life in service to the country through teaching, Mrs. Jane Garcia.
Garcia passed away on Monday, January 25, after an 18-year long battle with cancer. She was 64.
She was a pillar at St. Ignatius R.C. Primary School, where she spent the entirety of her teaching career, having influenced generations of Belizean including this publication’s news editor. Following her retirement, Garcia took her talents and wisdom to the YMCA, where she continued to assist students in unlocking their full potential.
Lureen Ciego, Principal at St. Ignatius, noted that even after retirement, Garcia was still volunteering at the school, helping with different events.
“It was really a shock to us. She was a fighter,” Ciego said. “She was the type of person where, even through illness, she would be at school, so you would not have known she was suffering.”
She was buried at the Lord Ridge Cemetery. Due to current COVID-19 regulations, there were limitations placed on attending her funeral, though it was streamed on Paulino’s Funeral Home’s Facebook page.
Breaking Belize News joins with educators and past students to offer sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the late Jane Garcia.
May she rest in peace.
